As the world awaits the December premiere of Avatar: The Way Of Water, James Cameron’s follow-up to the highest-grossing film in history, word comes that Cameron may not be directing the next two planned films in the series himself.
“The Avatar movies themselves are kind of overwhelming,” Cameron told Empire in an interview. “I have other things that I’m developing that are exciting. I think eventually in time—I don’t know if it’s three or four—I’m going to want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over so that I can do some other things that I’m also interested in doing. Or maybe not. I do not know.”
However, his enthusiasm is strong for the upcoming films.
“Everything I have to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, the themes that are important to me in real life and in my life in cinema, I can say on this canvas,” Cameron said. “I got more excited as I went along. The fourth movie is a dud. It’s a bastard. In fact, I hope I can. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the box so it will come out regardless. I really hope we can make it four and five, because at the end of the day it’s a big story.”
Cameron previously tapped Robert Rodriguez to direct Alita: Battle Angel, a film he had long planned to adapt for the screen and fans of the graphic novel it’s based on had hoped he would direct. Cameron was too busy with the Avatar films at the time, but stayed on board as an executive producer and co-writer.
Avatar: The Path of Water takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film. It follows the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the problems that haunt them, the efforts they make to protect each other, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they experience.
The sequel also stars Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Oona Chaplin, Jermaine Clement and others.
Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters worldwide on December 16, 2022.
