Summer Games Done Quick, a charity speed marathon that returned with an in-person event for the first time in several years, took place between June 26 and July 3 in Bloomington, Minnesota. And at the end of the week, after all the runs were over, the event raised a whopping $3 million for charity.
The final tally was $3,021,310.49, all of which will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières. When you add that to the $3.4 million raised by Awesome Games Done Quick earlier this year, which went to the Cancer Prevention Foundation, that’s a lot of money for people to part with to see runners do some awesome video game stuff.
SGDQ 2022 was GDQ’s first in-person event since the pandemic started in early 2020, so it was great to see a live crowd to support/react to all the action going on. If you didn’t catch any of the action yourself, here are some highlights. We’ll start with this amazing Ocarina of Time run, which beats the game fast, sure, but it also does so much more:

And here’s a Pokémon Emerald game that featured four-player co-op, along with a randomizer that meant that every time their Pokémon leveled up, it would randomly change into a different Pokémon. The result was absolute chaos:

It’s a Super Mario Sunshine race that has ups, downs, and ups again before ending:

Finally, here’s a Yakuza: Like a Dragon run that completed the entire game in less time than it took me to finish a few of the more difficult boss fights:

If you want to see more runs or just pick one from a game that interests you in particular, the organizers have recordings of each one on their YouTube page.
