Fireworks, donuts and mayhem erupt into the night in the Loop
The Fourth of July kicked off with a bang with exploding fireworks, cars doing donuts and police swarming downtown Chicago.
CHICAGO – The Fourth of July got off to a roaring start in downtown Chicago.
Two officers were injured after responding to a crowd blocking the road around 3:35 a.m. in the 200 block of North Columbus Drive, police said.
The officers were in a marked patrol car when one of the crows threw an object that broke the windshield and damaged the hood and headlights, police said. Both officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Four people have been detained and are being questioned by detectives from the Third District.
Video sent to Fox 32 shows drivers doing donuts in the street around 3:30 a.m. at Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive, with police there trying to stop it all. Several fireworks were shot into the sky above the intersection.
People in the crowd also allegedly shot fireworks at nearby police cars, according to witnesses to the chaos.
The Fox 32 newsroom was away from the explosions minutes before we went on the air.
Police were also on Lower Randolph Street, where cars were said to be speeding.
