Work Week Forecast: June’s zonal flow may break in July

For us to find a long period of warm sunny weather will mean this pattern needs to change

What about that wind?

That’s been the question I’ve been asked the most since the snow melted.

Temperatures in June almost reached their seasonal values and although it felt a bit humid – the Sol region had only slightly more rain than normal. The big difference was the wind and subsequent rain every few days.

Winds blow overhead in the middle of our atmosphere, controlling the speed and direction of weather systems. This spring, that flow was in what we call a west-to-east zonal flow. This setup creates fast moving weather systems that never stick around for long but bring lots of wind and rain every few days. For us to find a long spell of warm sunny weather will mean this pattern needs to change, which is expected to happen in July.

On Monday it will be cloudy with showers and throughout the day with temperatures up to 20°C. Rain will arrive early in the morning, with a break in the afternoon before returning for the evening.

Skies should gradually clear on Tuesday, with daytime temperatures reaching 23°C.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with maximum daytime temperatures around 25°C. The end of this work week brings mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 20s.
