A man was rushed to hospital in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after a shooting on Banff Avenue in south Ottawa, first responders said.
The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. in the middle of an Ottawa apartment complex near a park and community center. The victim was taken to an Ottawa hospital trauma unit, paramedics said.
Police patrols and caution tape surrounded the scene, not far from Ledbury Avenue. A lane running between two blocks of terraced houses was also cordoned off. A pool of blood could be seen on a path between the two buildings.
Banff Avenue Community House, which provides essential services as well as programs for children and youth in the Ottawa Community Housing Project, is located directly across the street.
Several people in the neighborhood told the CBC they heard multiple gunshots.
Charles Pereira, who lives nearby, said he was just getting off the phone when he heard “two shots.” He saw police cars pull up and got out to see what was going on.
“I noticed that a gentleman was lying on the pavement bleeding and [first responders] they were trying to … resuscitate him,” he said.
“This is not the first time this has happened. They bring them here every now and then, the shooting,” Pereira said, but added that this was the first time he had witnessed the aftermath of a daytime shooting.
Count. Riley Brockington, who represents the district, posted on social media Tuesday that he was “very saddened” to hear about the shooting.
