Federal climate rebate checks hit Manitobans this month

Manitobans battered by high fuel prices and inflation can expect some relief this month when they receive a climate rebate from the federal government.

Manitobans can expect the money around July 15 as part of the federal climate action stimulus program, the federal government announced Tuesday.

“For 2022-23, a family of four in Manitoba will get up to $832, that’s on average,” said Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid. Those living in rural areas or small communities are entitled to an additional 10 percent.

“We know how important this is to families struggling with the high cost of living,” Duguid said, speaking at a news conference in The Forks.

Carbon pricing

He suggested that the carbon pricing framework both makes it easier for industry to reduce emissions while giving Canadians some support and incentive to green their homes and lives.

“We’re seeing the impact of past actions … We’re seeing increasing flooding, drought, extreme weather, and we’ve never seen a trend like this before,” he said. “Doing nothing is the most expensive policy of all.”

Previously, payments came during tax season in the form of a refundable tax credit. The July payment will cover the first two quarters of the year.

Moving forward, Manitobans can expect to receive a check every quarter, with the next two installments coming this October and in January 2023, Duguid said.

The total annual credit available is $416 for an individual, $208 for a spouse or civil partner, $104 for a child under 19 and $208 for the first child in a one-parent family.

To be eligible for a loan, you must be a resident of the province and meet one of the following requirements: be 19 years of age or older; you have or have had a spouse or common-law partner; be or have been a parent who lives or has lived with your child. Children have different requirements.
