Highway 1 crash leaves 3 dead

Three people have died in a head-on crash on the Trans-Canada Highway, RCMP say.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday on a stretch of Highway 1 that runs past Shuswap Lake.

Police said the crash was near the community of Sorrento.

It’s unclear what caused the crash, but witnesses told police they saw a black sedan cross the oncoming lane into the path of a westbound SUV.

The cars collided head-on, and the passengers in both cars died on the spot.

They have been identified as a 51-year-old man from Sorrento and a 67-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, both from nearby Blind Bay.

The highway was closed for hours while crews reconstructed the crash as part of the investigation.

The British Columbia Coroner’s Office is also investigating the incident.
