An Italian resort town has banned tourists from walking around in bathing suits and bare torsos to stop what the mayor described as “widespread indecent behaviour”.
Sorrento’s Massimo Coppola said the naked flesh was upsetting to local residents, damaging the city’s image and would now impose fines of up to €500 (£425).
The city has recently witnessed “behavior that is perceived by the majority of people to be contrary to the decency and decency that characterizes civilized coexistence,” he said.
“Continuing this situation, as well as causing discomfort and anxiety among the local population and among visitors, could lead to a negative assessment of the quality of life in our city, with consequences for its image and for tourism,” Coppola said.
