OTTAWA, July 7 (Reuters) – Canada will send 39 armored vehicles made by General Dynamics ( GD.N ) to Ukraine later this summer to help Kyiv defend itself against a Russian invasion, Canada’s defense minister said on Thursday defense Anita Anand.

The so-called armored combat support vehicle, manufactured at a General Dynamics plant based in London, Ontario, can be used as ambulances, support and recovery vehicles or troop carriers.

The fleet to be sent, announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the end of last week’s NATO summit in Madrid, is part of the C$500 million in military support for Ukraine outlined in Canada’s April budget.

Anand told reporters that the deal for armored vehicles for Ukraine is in addition to a separate multibillion-dollar contract for 360 vehicles for the Canadian armed forces that was awarded to General Dynamics Land Systems in 2019.

“These 39 vehicles will start being delivered this summer and the remaining 360 will continue to be delivered in the coming months,” Anand told reporters.
