Don’t misread this headline.
It’s day two of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, and with their second pick, the Vancouver Canucks selected left defenseman Elias Peterson in the third round, 80th overall.
At 6’2” and 185 pounds, Peterson is a bigger defender whose number one asset is his shot. He has scored 12 goals in 37 games for the minors this year and has also dressed for 10 games in the SHL.
Here’s what Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson, who ranked Peterson 45th, had to say about Peterson’s game:

A two-way defenseman who brings good physicality, a smart stick and high-quality skating. He won 17 contests in the SHL and jumped out offensively in the J20 playoffs.
“We’re sitting here and we can see the Canucks picking soon,” Peterson’s agent Joachim Persson told Rick Dhaliwal. “This is Elias’ favorite team, it’s a dream come true for him. He can’t believe Vancouver chose him, he’s so excited.
In our last Monday Mail Bag, we talked about the potential of the Canucks picking this Elias Peterson, but we definitely didn’t think he would go in the third round.
Here’s what we wrote:
Born in Västerås, Sweden — this Elias Pettersson is a 17-year-old left back currently playing for Örebro in the SHL. He spent the early season bouncing around the J20 and J18 leagues, but played well enough to suit up for some SHL games.
Peterson is not expected to go in the top 60 and could fall as low as the fifth round according to some scouts.
“He doesn’t have a ton up there, but he can play in a hyper-specialized bottom-pairing defensive role,” one scout told CanucksArmy.
It’s clear that the Canucks believe in this kid, and we’ll soon get a further explanation of what they like about this player.

To drive you a little more crazy, we’re pleased to inform you that Elias Pettersson just said that his favorite player is Elias Pettersson.
It worked out pretty well for the Canucks the last time the public consensus decided they had drafted a player named Elias Pettersson.
