DRAFT: The Blackhawks select Kevin Korczynski with the #7 overall pick

With their first pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks selected Kevin Korczynski, defenseman from the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL, No. 7 overall.

Chicago acquired the No. 7 pick just before the draft opened in a trade with the Ottawa Senators, acquiring that pick, a second pick (39th overall) in 2022 and a third-round pick in 2024 in exchange for forward Alex DeBrincat.

Korczynski, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, recorded 65 points (4G, 61A) in 67 regular-season games for the Thunderbirds this season, plus another 19 points (6G, 13A) in 25 WHL playoff games with Seattle falling in the WHL Final to Edmonton.

After another trade earlier in the evening sending Kirby Dach to Montreal for first- and second-round picks, Chicago holds eight more picks in the first three rounds of the 2022 NHL Draft:

  • number 13
  • No. 38
  • No. 39
  • No. 57
  • No. 66
  • No. 81
  • No. 90
  • No. 94
