The RNC emphasizes the importance of keeping pets safe while driving

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is stressing the importance of ensuring all pets are secured in vehicles while traveling this summer.

The RNC recently teamed up with the City of St. Johns to highlight the importance of pet safety in vehicles this summer.

RNC Constable James Cadigan explains that while pets are not specifically mentioned in the Road Traffic Act, they fall under various categories of obstruction, due care and consideration.

For example, he says if a dog is found to be on a driver’s lap while driving, it will be considered an obstruction and the driver could be stopped and fined.

In addition, Cadigan says it’s the driver’s responsibility as a pet owner to have the necessary equipment to secure a pet.

He says this is not only a driving problem for the person behind the wheel, but also for the safety of the animal.

He says that if a collision occurs, that pet will become a projectile, potentially injuring the pet and others in the car.
