The storm is capable of producing golf ball-sized hail and heavy rain, with the potential to form tornadoes.

Funnel clouds and at least two tornadoes have been spotted in the Sundre area this afternoon. Photos posted on Twitter showed a funnel cloud and a possible tornado near Bergen, about five kilometers south of Sundre around 3 p.m. There was also a funnel cloud seen further east near Schantz near Hwy 22.

There are also tornado watches issued north of Calgary, including for the city of Red Deer, meaning conditions are favorable for the development of strong thunderstorms that can produce tornadoes.

The situation in southern Alberta is volatile, with watches and warnings issued and then lifted.

In the event of a tornado, Environment Canada advises people to take shelter immediately if they hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, flying debris or threatening weather approaching. Finding shelter includes moving to a sturdy building if possible and going to the lowest floor while staying away from exterior walls and windows.

As a last resort, Environment Canada advises lying low and protecting your head from flying debris.

Calgary was under a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the day.

The weather warning comes two days after a tornado touched down in the village of Alliance, about 100 miles east of Red Deer.
