A Chatham woman is dead after being hit by a train.

Chatham-Kent police said the woman was struck by a CP train and pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been made public.

The collision happened near Colborne Street and Princess Street shortly before 3.30pm on Wednesday.

“Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the female party,” police wrote in a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Emergency crews were on the scene for several hours and traffic was snarled. Authorities say all railroad crossings between Merritt Avenue and Princess Street were blocked. The level crossings at Keil Drive and Bloomfield Road remained open.

Chatham-Kent police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Lisa Roger at lisaro@chatham-kent.ca.
