Ben Wallace rules out offer ‘after careful consideration’

Sir Bob Neill has defended Rishi Sunak’s tax hike in office, saying the former chancellor will restore the economy and confidence in politics.

Speaking to BBC Two’s Newsnight, Sir Bob, who has publicly backed Mr Sunak, said: “On the economy, he has actually demonstrated that he is a pragmatist on the economy. Thanks to his work as chancellor we had the leave scheme which actually saved millions of jobs.”

Meanwhile, Isle of Wight MP Bob Seeley said he would consider Liz Truss, Penny Mordaunt and Ben Wallace – all of whom are yet to declare – “more than anyone”.

“Rishi is a great candidate and Bob is good to support Rishi. Sai is a great candidate. For me, we live in a global political and economic crisis and above all I want clarity of leadership. Above the cost of living, above inflation, above Ukraine. And for me Penny can do that, possibly Ben, for me right now the candidate most likely to achieve that would be Liz because that’s someone who says what she means and means what she says.”
