Rockstar confirms the end of main support for Red Dead Online

Rockstar has told fans not to expect any more major updates for Red Dead Online as it continues to shift development resources to Grand Theft Auto 6.

This is bad news for Red Dead Online players who have been complaining for some time that the game has been underserved and neglected by Rockstar compared to the more lucrative GTA Online.

Now Rockstar has laid out its plan to keep Red Dead Online on life support and has admitted that it is focusing more on GTA6.

Ian takes a look at modding Red Dead Redemption 2 VR.

“Over the past few years, we’ve been steadily putting more development resources into the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series – understanding more than ever the need to exceed player expectations and make this next entry the best it can be,” Rockstar wrote. and as a result, we’re in the process of making some changes to the way we support Red Dead Online.”

These changes will mean there will be no more “major themed content updates like in previous years,” Rockstar admits.

Instead, Red Dead Online players should expect events highlighting existing content, plus “seasonal special events and enhancements to the experience.” Some new Telegram missions will also follow this year.

Earlier this week, Red Dead Online fans announced plans to hold an in-game funeral for the live service to mark what they suggested would be “one year since [the game] abandoned’.

In response to Rockstar’s announcement, prominent fan-run Twitter account Red Dead News wrote that “Rockstar’s management of Red Dead Online has been a series of failures, from failing to implement premium currency and content gaps, to bugs that break the game that still exist and a complete lack of protection for PC players against moderators.

“That’s without mentioning the promises of misleading content and the lack of communication beyond them,” the account continued. “Today’s announcement is news that Rockstar could have shared in February after the ‘next’ GTA announcement, why keep fans waiting?” It’s bad form.’

Rockstar admitted that GTA 6 was in “active development” and “well advanced” in February this year, following a previous Bloomberg report that suggested the game wouldn’t launch until 2024 at the earliest.
