Amid UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation following a handful of political scandals, including a mass revolt by senior members of his government, there is now a universally recognized satirical tune playing outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, thanks to actor Hugh Grant.
Following a personal request made by Hugh Grant on Twitter, Brexit protester Steve Bray (@snb19692) played the theme song from British comedy TV series ‘The Benny Hill Show’, known as ‘Yakety Sax’, in front of Parliament.
“Good morning @snb19692,” Grant, who starred in the UK premiere of Love Actually, wrote on Thursday morning. “I’m glad you got your speakers back. Do you happen to have Benny Hill’s music handy?’
Bray, who is known in London for his musical protests in the wake of Brexit, installed loudspeakers outside Westminster and honored Grant’s request with full force.
The comic song could even be heard in the background of live news broadcasts as journalists relayed the latest developments surrounding Johnson’s resignation.
Johnson stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday, but said he would stay on as prime minister until the party chooses his successor. The schedule for this trial will be announced next week. The last leadership race took six weeks.
