Rockstar has updated fans on the development status of Grand Theft Auto VI, while also announcing that Red Dead Online will not receive any major content updates.
The game’s developer explained in a blog post: “Over the past few years, we’ve been steadily shifting more development resources to the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series – understanding more than ever the need to exceed player expectations and to make the next entry the best, which is possible.”
Obviously, this comes at a price, and that price is the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Fans had already complained that it was less Red Dead and more Dead online, and had actually planned an in-game funeral for the service on July 13, a year before the last day of the last significant new content.
Perhaps in response to fans who thought Red Dead Online was over, Rockstar has officially confirmed that this is the case.
“Along with seasonal special events and improvements to the experience – plus other changes to improve and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment – we plan to build on existing modes and add new Telegram missions this year, rather than providing major thematic updates to content as in previous years,” the blog post continued.
“We will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity through the Newswire and beyond.”
So online isn’t shutting down, but the only support it will get is bug fixes, small events, and promotions. No completion of certain storylines, no required features like online lobbies or creator mode, or a commitment to stop rampant cheating in the PC version. Suffice it to say, the in-game funeral is still to come.
