The man is in his 30s, lives in Auckland and has recently returned from overseas travel to a country with reported cases of monkeypox.

Given the rise in cases internationally, including Australia, the arrival in New Zealand was not unexpected.

There is a very small number of contacts with the case who are advised to monitor for symptoms. There is no evidence of community transmission.

Cases of monkeypox outside of endemic countries have been identified primarily among gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men, and international cases are clustered around events where this occurs.

The first symptoms of monkeypox include one or more of the following: headache, sudden onset of fever (>38.0C), chills, swollen lymph nodes, muscle and body aches, back pain and fatigue. The characteristic rash, which usually resembles chicken pox, appears after a few days.

The vast majority of people with monkeypox can be treated safely at home, and there are very few deaths from monkeypox worldwide.
