A couple are ‘lucky to be alive’ after they were smashed by a giant wave while trying to take a selfie.
The man and woman enjoyed the wild weather and watched huge 4.1m waves crash over the Nobis Wall in Newcastle, north of Sydney, early on Monday morning.
Moments later, the pair were swept away by a monster wave and disappeared into the white, with the harrowing moment caught on camera by shocked bystanders.
“I realized they had disappeared and gone down where they were climbing the rocks,” Ben Arkinstall told NBN News.
An onlooker watched helplessly after massive waves swept a man and woman off the Nobis Wall near Newcastle
“A few waves came in behind the initial wave and kept coming over them.”
“It could have been a lot worse. They may have ended up in the ocean. They lost all their phones.
The man, aged in his 40s, and a woman in her 30s miraculously made it to shore where they were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with multiple injuries, including suspected fractures.
Paramedics said the couple were very lucky to be alive.
“Patients being swept into the water can be a dangerous, life-threatening situation,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Jake Broughton-Rose said.
“In this case, the patients were able to get back to the wall where paramedics treated them for suspected multiple fractures.
“This is a reminder for people to stay safe and vigilant around the water, especially when there are dangerous surf conditions. Our patients today are extremely lucky to be alive.

The near-tragedy came on a day when the Bureau of Meteorology issued dangerous surf warnings along the entire 1,300km coastline of New South Wales from Byron as far north as Eden.
Huge waves also hit the Sydney coast on Monday, where a lifeguard tower was left dangling on a fast-disappearing sand wall near Cronulla and needed cranes to be lifted to safety.
A dangerous surf warning remained in place along the coast between Byron and Newcastle on Tuesday as lifeguards issued a warning to avoid massive waves
“It’s not worth the risk of going all the way out to the breakwall in such a big southerly swell, it’s like a magnet there,” said lifeguard Michael Baldi.
“Here’s what happens, they get hurt.”
