Britain could experience its hottest day this week

“We currently think there is about a 30 percent chance of a new record being set next weekend.” The current UK record for the hottest temperature on record is 38.7C.’

“A heat warning has also been issued – level 3 heat wave warning for East Anglia and the south east – in effect from 9am tomorrow.”

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the hot weather when it comes, but also check their vulnerable family, friends and neighbors to be sure they are prepared for the warm conditions ahead.”

It advised people to take simple precautions to protect themselves in the heat, such as “covering windows exposed to direct sunlight” and making sure “fridges, freezers and fans are working properly”.

It comes amid warnings that people should avoid washing their cars in the hot weather to prevent taps running dry.

Anglian Water, a water company operating in the east of England, is asking people to be aware of the amount of water they use during the heatwave.

Its website advises people to “skip the car wash”, adding that “a dusty car means you’re doing your bit for the environment”.
