Urban fantasy often leans toward a neon-blue-night filter, but in Day Shift , the upcoming action flick from Netflix and Jamie Foxx, vampire hunters battle the leeches of life in sub-seventy-two and sunny Los Angeles. After revealing the trailer via Twitter, Netflix proudly stated that the film is “from the people who taught John Wick how to kick ass,” which may not actually be an understatement.
Faced with the impending relocation of his family, Jamie Foxx bemoans the low wages he receives from selling vampire parts now that he is out of the Union. As he tries to get back into the favor of the hunter’s union, his old friend (Snoop Dogg) helps him by giving him advice and putting in a good word for him. It’s also good for Day Shift because it recognizes that you get paid more working in a union shop than freelancing. We love to see solidarity.

Light on any plot as far as I can see and heavy on monster hunting, Day Shift looks like a fun action comedy with some fun twisted vampires and lots of shooting. Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco star and seem to be doing the character work they do best, the former full of black humor and menacing one-liners with a heart of gold, the latter a self-deprecating, serious good guy who’s in over his head. JJ Perry directs, and the supporting cast includes Snoop Dogg, Karla Souza, Megan Good and Natasha Liu Bordizzo.
Day Shift will be available to stream on Netflix on Friday, August 12.
