UK weather forecast today: National emergency could be declared if temperatures hit 40C

UK Weather: Latest Met Office Forecast

Ministers are reportedly drawing up plans for an emergency response to the heatwave currently gripping the country, following the Met Office’s amber heat warning on Monday.

The Daily Telegraph reported that a Cobra meeting was held in Downing Street on the high temperatures in the UK and the possible danger to life if temperatures reach 40C.

An amber extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office for “extremely hot” temperatures until Sunday, with forecasters warning that the conditions have the potential to cause serious illness or even death.

The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) may declare a “level four emergency” if the heat becomes so severe that “illness and death may occur among the fit and healthy”.

A spokesman told the paper: “There is the possibility of a level four heatwave. If it gets above 104F (40C), it will likely be a level four heat wave for the first time.”

The heat wave has only just begun and forecasters have refused to rule out the possibility that the UK could see record temperatures of 40C towards the end of the week.

No, it’s not a commute, although taking public transport during a heatwave is a lot like taking a one-way ticket directly to hell, writes Victoria Richards.

30 per cent chance of Sunday being the hottest day ever recorded in the UK

There is a 30 per cent chance that Sunday will be the hottest day ever recorded in the UK.

On Monday, the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat in parts of the UK ahead of a further rise in temperatures this week.

The rare warning states that there may be danger to life or potentially serious illness as a result of the scorching temperatures.

Other problems may include road closures and delays or cancellations of rail and air travel.

The Met Office said the warning was in effect from 00:01 on Sunday until 11:59 p.m., when temperatures were expected to reach 30 degrees.

The hottest day on record in the UK was a scorching 38.7C recorded at Cambridge Botanic Gardens in July 2019.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told the PA news agency on Monday: “Parts of south-east England could top 35C on Sunday.

“We are currently expecting a 30% chance of seeing the hottest temperature on record in the UK.”

The Met Office said some areas in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see some light rain, but mostly in small amounts.

There will be no such break for Wales and central and southern England and temperatures will remain high, although forecasters expect the whole of the UK to have a much cloudier start to the day than on Monday.

‘It’s hotter than hell!’ British Airways passengers were forced to wait on a sweltering plane for 90 minutes

Passengers traveling on a delayed British Airways flight to London Heathrow were kept waiting on a sweltering plane for 90 minutes at Nice Airport last night (Joe Caird writes).

Cabin crew handed out water to passengers, but two fell ill and had to be taken off the plane, according to MailOnline. After 90 minutes, the pilot allowed the remaining passengers to get off the plane and wait on the airbridge.

Smartphone footage shows passengers trying to cool off in the airbridge. Once back on board, the cabin crew handed out packets of crisps to the passengers.

“This is disgraceful. It’s hotter than hell on this plane. British Airways is slowly killing us,” said one passenger.

“It’s really disgusting that they don’t have air conditioning. British Airways is literally a joke.

The Met Office is issuing an amber weather warning for Sunday

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat across much of the UK ahead of a further rise in temperatures this week.

The warning is in place from midnight on Sunday until 11.59pm, when temperatures are forecast to hit 30C, but the forecaster added it could be extended until Monday next week.

It applies to the East Midlands, East Anglia, London, South East, North East, North West, South West, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.

A Met Office statement said: “There is likely to be adverse health effects for the whole population, not just those most vulnerable to extreme heat, resulting in potentially serious illness or life-threatening illness. Government advice is that 999 services should only be used in emergencies; seek advice from 111 if you need non-emergency health advice.

“Substantial changes in work practices and everyday life [are] will probably have to. Significantly more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers, leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents.

“Road delays and road closures are possible, along with rail and air travel delays and cancellations, with the potential for significant welfare issues for those experiencing even moderate delays.”

Sand blasters ready to repair melting roads

A city council is preparing to deploy grit in response to melting roads as temperatures rise.

Hampshire County Council said the machines will spread light sand dust.

This “acts like a sponge to soak up excess bitumen,” according to the authority.

Sand is commonly used to spread salt in the winter to stop ice forming on roads.

The areas most likely to be targeted by vehicles this week are those with older road surfaces, in rural areas and facing south.

Residents are urged to report road problems on the municipality’s website.

Drivers who find tar on their tires are advised to wash it off with warm water.
