A man (aged 40) has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Clare

A man in his 40s has died after being rushed to hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming off the Clare coast.

ardaí were called by the coastguard when man after man got into trouble while swimming at Fanroe Beach, Co. Clare, about 9.30pm yesterday.

Police and emergency services attended the scene and the man was pulled from the water.

The man was taken to Galway University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This is the second drowning this week as more people take to the water due to rising temperatures.

A teenager died on Tuesday after getting into difficulty while swimming at Burrow Beach in Sutton, North Dublin.

Speaking about the deaths of teenagers, Labor councilor Brian McDonagh said: “We just have to be so careful. It’s so, so awful. We have beautiful beaches and we love to see people enjoying them and it’s just devastating for a family.

“Everyone feels it a little bit. I swim on the other side, at the Portmarnock end of this beach and it was just a lovely summer day; as hot as you can get and it’s devastating that someone has gone out of their way to do something fairly normal and then gets into trouble.

“It reminds us how much we should pay attention to each other.”

Mr McDonough’s message to look out for each other while in the water is now echoing across the country as another family has lost someone to drowning.
