DFO research vessel officially launched at ceremony in St John’s Harbour

The Canadian Coast Guard research vessel John Cabot was officially dedicated in a ceremony held in the southern part of St. John’s Harbour.

DFO Regional Science Director Atef Mansour says the vessel, delivered in the fall of 2020, will be used for multi-species research.

The trawler will not only be used to monitor stocks of various species each spring and fall, but will also conduct oceanographic research by collecting biological and chemical data to assess environmental conditions.

The dedication was a long time coming. Stock assessments of a number of species have been interrupted or suspended over the past year due to a combination of mechanical problems and weather conditions. Mansour says stock assessments are ongoing and the vessel is headed to the Scotian Shelf in the summer to help with stock assessments there before returning to Newfoundland this fall.
