New emojis for iOS and Android include high five and shaking face

Sunday is World Emoji Day, so that means we’re getting a preview of the emojis that will eventually come to iOS and Android. Although the design will vary by platform, Emojipedia has a list of draft and example images for Emoji 15.0. The Unicode Consortium has only 31 draft emoticons this year, which will likely be released in 2022 and 2023. While the draft emoticons may change between now and the finalization in September, most (if not all) will make it. Contenders include a shaking face and the much-needed high-five and wireless emoticons.

The shaking face emoji will primarily be used for shock reactions or could become the official earthquake emoji thanks to its vibration-like attributes. Although people often use the folded arms emoji as a high five, this year we’re getting an official one. The right and left hand push will act as a way to say no or give a high five when used together. The perfect reaction if your boss asks you to do something and then you can innocently claim that you’re just high-fiving like a true professional.

We’re finally getting wireless emoji too. Surprisingly, there are currently no Wi-Fi emojis, so everyone had to use the Antenna Bars emoji, which are designed to mimic a cellular signal. Wireless emoticons will save all Wi-Fi lovers. If you’ve been waiting for pink heart emojis, it looks like they’ll be arriving later this year too.

The list of draft emoticons also includes a range of animals. Image: Emojipedia

It wouldn’t be an emoji update without some new animals and plants. Emoji 15 includes new mammals, birds, and even a jellyfish emoji that no one wants to find on the beach. This year we will get a face of a moose, a donkey, a blackbird, a goose and a wing. Hyacinth, ginger and pea are also on the way.

Latin music fans will be happy to hear that maracas are set to appear as emoji on iOS and Android later this year. And if you were forced to play the recorder or flute at a young age, a flute emoticon arrives to relive those childhood memories.

In total, there are 31 recommended emojis for Emoji 15, down significantly from 112 recommendations last year and 334 in 2020. “In fact, this is the fewest number of new emojis that Unicode has ever recommended at any one time,” says Emojipedia.

This list will not be finalized by the Unicode Consortium until September, but most candidate drafts are generally accepted. The Verge’s own Jay Peters has already made suggestions for the greeting face, bubbles, yawning face, and waffle emoticons. You can read about the path of emoticon creation right here.
