Toronto gas leak prompts apartment evacuations

Residents evacuated from two downtown co-ops after a “high pressure” gas line in downtown Toronto was damaged are now safe and sound at home.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, construction workers hit and severed a large gas main near Blue Jays Way and Wellington Street.

The affected line, which Toronto police said was “blown,” is located in an alley behind a restaurant and supplies natural gas to a building under construction.

No injuries were reported.

As a precaution, about 300 residents of two apartment buildings at 250 and 270 Wellington Street were evacuated, the Toronto Fire Department told CP24. The TTC sent buses to provide shelter to those directly affected.

The Toronto Fire Department also advised residents of other buildings in the immediate vicinity to “shelter in place.”

In addition, police restricted access to roads in the area of ​​the leak for about an hour.

Enbridge crews have already contained the leak, which the Toronto Fire Department said “does not appear to be gas leaking into surrounding buildings.”
