Assassin’s Creed Aztec rumors have been squashed

Don’t expect to see an Aztec setting for Assassin’s Creed in the near future – despite the loud rumor to the contrary.

Yesterday, a claim that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be set in the Aztec era gained traction online, stemming from a Twitter user who previously leaked details about Ubisoft’s other Far Cry series.

Now Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has debunked Aztec’s claim – while also confirming a Eurogamer report earlier this year that Baghdad would be included in the franchise’s next title.

The crossover event of Valhalla and Odyssey released for free last year.

“The next AC game is Rift, set in Baghdad,” Schreier wrote on reddit. “Next will be AC Infinity, and while that will include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you call them, I’ve heard of the main two, and neither of them are Aztec.”

Rift is the codename for Ubisoft’s next installment of Assassin’s Creed, which is designed to be a smaller, stealth-focused experience compared to the last massive games in the series.

Bloomberg previously published details of the Rift in February and said it would include the popular Valhalla character Basim.

At the time, Eurogamer noted that it had also heard details about the Rift’s production, including plans to include Baghdad, a detail that Schreier has now reiterated.

Infinity, meanwhile, is the main Assassin’s Creed project, with Ubisoft Quebec and Montreal working on it – both of the franchise’s two lead development studios. It will reportedly feature multiple time periods, settings, stories and characters with additional parts of the game launching over time.

Ubisoft said it will “reveal the future of Assassin’s Creed” in September as fans continue to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary.

Valhalla’s ambitious post-launch content also now has an end date, with the game’s final epilogue set to be added as a free update at the end of the year.
