Lisandro Martinez could be followed by Felix Uduohai as the second left-sided centre-back

Manchester United may be on the verge of signing Lisandro Martinez, but they are said to be targeting Felix Uduhohai as another defensive reinforcement.

On Friday, Christian Eriksen was unveiled as Manchester United’s second signing of the summer. First up was left back Tyrell Malacia and their attention will soon turn to their defence.

In fact, Lisandro Martinez is on his way to Manchester to complete a transfer from Ajax. This will reunite him with manager Erik ten Haag.

Martinez will bolster a department that has come under scrutiny in recent months. Harry Maguire has been in the limelight but will continue as captain while the likes of Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones may leave.

The Ten Hag should therefore be able to use Maguire, Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof as centre-back options in 2022-23. But it now emerges that he may be targeting a fifth piece of the puzzle.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Manchester United could make an attempt to sign Felix Uduhohai after completing the Martinez deal.

The Italian source claims that United are mulling the idea of adding Uduokhai to their squad. He currently plays for Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

United are said to value the 24-year-old, who has just two years left on his Augsburg contract. He made 13 appearances for them in the German top flight last season, during which he had several injury problems.

As a left-footed centre-back, Uduohai would have a similar profile to Martinez. However, United don’t have anyone else with that description, so perhaps he will be cover for the Argentine.

Maguire, Varane and Lindelof could then compete for a place on the right of the centre-back pair.

Man United must have priorities other than Felix Uduhohai

While Uduohhai would be an interesting signing, centre-back is not the next position United should look to sign following Martinez’s arrival.

Instead, they should look for a back-up goalkeeper, central midfielder, or even a center forward.

Although their defense was the focus of attention last season, it is about to be strengthened. Therefore, in order to ensure balance on the pitch, Manchester United need to consider what are the most pressing areas they need.

Perhaps they could return to Uduokhai after other areas were explored. His addition would be intriguing after his lack of action last season, but the former Wolfsburg man remains highly regarded by some.

So far, it doesn’t look like anything has progressed with Man United. But he could be someone to keep an eye on as the transfer window progresses.
