Denying that Rishi Sunak stabbed Boris Johnson in the back by resigning from the Cabinet last week, Richard Holden, the Red Wall Tory MP, defended the former Chancellor’s decision to withdraw his support from the Prime Minister.
He also denied having any doubts about Mr Sunak’s integrity.
“He’s been very upfront throughout this whole situation. He has supported the Prime Minister over the last few years, through some really difficult decisions about Covid,” Mr Holden said.
He also played down some suggestions, informed by polling, that Mr Sunack was deeply unpopular among Tory party members compared to other lesser-known candidates.
“I think it’s very easy to project whatever you like onto someone you don’t know that well.”
“As time goes by, things develop and you start thinking about what is realistic, what is for the benefit of the country.”
He continued: “I think he’s really going to start connecting and hopefully we can walk away and offer a positive vision and not these attacks of conservatives against conservatives, which I really don’t like.”
