42 mins: Another penalty for the Wallabies, this time to Genge for a high tackle on Wright after Australia were threatened behind the halfway line.
41 mins: There’s a penalty almost immediately after play resumes for Australia against Ludlam. The breeze, which has picked up, now favors Australia and superboat Hodge.
Here the two sides return for another 40 minutes. Only one point is the difference with the Ella-Mobbs cup that you can pick up.
Cares justifiably removed, brave of Jones to do so soon. JVP doesn’t stick to the base of the hand like many other scrum halves do. He’s really quick to the breakdown and who’s going to take the pass. I hope he will make the difference.

Agree that it’s brave, but you also have to question why Care started this.
I have nothing to write about England. The scrum once again dominated, but apart from some flashes from Freeman and Steward, the rest was very choppy. Jack van Poortwillet’s impact was immediate.
Let’s just say the first half won’t be talked about in reverent tones for decades to come…

Australian team member James O’Connor summed it up pretty well at half-time. “We created a lot of opportunities, but we didn’t present them. A couple of missed passes at the rim. They worked their way up towards the end of the half and got points on the board, which is disappointing.”
White, Koroibete and Hooper were excellent for the Wallabies. The play behind the set was superb, especially off the line.
However, it was Hooper’s ability to chase down Care that probably led to the switch that allowed JVP to set up England’s try… a result that resulted from Farrell’s missed penalty hitting the post. Moments in sports are often difficult to legislate.

Absolutely. Vunipola looks to be fighting a lone hand and Hooper keeps the bite between his teeth for the Wallabies.
Half time: Australia 10-11 England
Farrell hooked his touchline to the left. England somehow led at the break, but the half was played on Australia’s terms.
I’M TRYING! Australia 10-11 England (Steward, 40)
England secures the line, but the post office makes little profit. There is a penalty advantage as the attacker edges the infield towards the line. The ball is then put through the hands and Freeman looks certain to score in the left corner but is somehow dropped. Then Lowes drives short. But finally JVP ignores his pack and sees his fullback rise in the lane and he rushes in to score. Huge moment for England.
39 mins: White breaks and runs but he’s isolated, can’t release and it’s a penalty in almost the same spot. This time England hit the right corner…
39 min: 30m out, right of the posts, Farrell hits the left upright!
38 mins: England get their third tackle penalty of the night, something for ‘balance’ explains the referee. This one is within striking distance for Owen Farrell.
37 mins: Another slick move off the line for the Wallabies, this time from right to left, with Koroibete taking contact, but as the phase moves back inside, there’s a loose carry and England can counter. The move fails when Nowell loses control – he looked attacked without the ball to me – but the sloppy passage is allowed to continue until another unprovoked error, this time by Slipper, prompts a whistle.
Interesting…JVP is for England in place of Care.
35 mins: England’s forwards are not making progress and the Care box again kicks down the line after the restart. In contrast, Australia run and make yards with ball in hand down the right. Wright then elects to run out needlessly and England accept the invitation to start at half-off.
PENALTY! Australia 10-6 England (Farrell, 34)
Farrell punishes Australia’s lapse in concentration with a 25-metre penalty just to the left of the posts.
32 mins: Bad mistake by the Wallabies with Hodge kicking a full kick, bringing play back inside the Australian 22. England secure the attacking line but almost immediately George loses possession on contact. England is not able. Fortunately, Vunipola does brilliantly to nail down the next game and secure a penalty kick break.
PENALTY! Australia 10-3 England (Lolessio, 31)
Lolessio increases Australia’s advantage and they are worth it with the balance from the opening half hour. They are stronger at the front and more dynamic at the rear.
29 mins: Australia’s scrum nearly half in need of a reset, eating up the clock. The Wallabies attack again down the right after the second set and Hodge almost breaks through. There are no “almosts” when Coroibete is roaring like a Pamplona bull and Australia are hungry for points. England fight back, Vunipola fights back and tries to counter but he is severely penalized for his second attempt and Lolesio has another opportunity to shoot for goal.
27 mins: Australia deserve to have their noses in front after a bright start. England lack the intensity of Brisbane. And it shows again, with Care once again guilty of a cheap turnover after being chased down by Hooper in a broken field.
TRANSFORMATION! Australia 7-3 England (Lolezio, 26)
Noah Lolesio avenged his earlier miss with a superb conversion from the right touchline into the wind.
I’M TRYING! Australia 5-3 England (Wright, 24)
Bosch! Super experience from Australia, from all 80 meters! Out of the defensive line on the left, the ball goes through hands on the right, aided by a long ball from Koroibete and the speed of movement catches England out. White then staged a one-two with Wright to draw England’s covering defender and leave him for dead. Brilliant rugby.
23 mins: Smith bombs behind the halfway line and Steward does phenomenally well to chase him down and bring him down with a powerful dive. But soon after, there is a damage penalty and everything becomes meaningless. Rugby; disappointing.
23 mins: Nice attack from England – again down the left – with clean hands from George in the byline, allowing Freeman to show his acceleration and get into the 22, but Coroibete is up strong to cover.
21 mins: England set up a motley down the left which attracts more big bodies than Weight Watchers. They end up being told to use it, so they end the line and invite Australia to run back against them. That’s exactly what they do until White’s box kick is smothered and Paisami concedes a ground-clearing penalty.
19 mins: Hodge turns down a challenge for a tackle, making contact in the middle near the right touchline. Australia pass through hands to the other flank before White sets up a couple of clean shots. Paisami kicks aimlessly and it is cleared by Smith, setting up another long kicking duel, this time involving Hodge. He also shows his class by booting to touch deep into England’s half.
PENALTY! Australia 0-3 England (Farrell, 18)
From about 40 meters, just to the right of the posts, Farrell gets the scoreboard moving. Hardly deserved, but England lead.
16 mins: Vunipola returns Wilson’s restart and gains the advantage. Freed, England throw the ball to the left touchline and attack for the first time tonight. Smith is quick with a step to gain some space and gains from Steward. But the attack disappears and we return to the penalty kick.

15 mins: Kerevi cuts through the midfield at the back of the scrum. Phases followed with some sweet offloads from the short side, but George was in the right place at the right time to make an interception just as the momentum was building. Care immediately kicks in the corner and the weight forces the line to drop.
13 mins: England have had no field position so far and again lose a cheap ball after a lineout near halfway – Care for a mistake for not paying attention to Hooper who snipes at the breakdown. It was a poor start for the visitors but the Wallabies have yet to punish them.
11 mins: ANOTHER DISMISSAL FOR ENGLAND! This time after the penalty in the box the Wallabies attack off the line, Tupou curls but with gold jerseys hitting the line his offload is ineffective, the ball goes to ground and England breathe a sigh of relief.
From the resulting scrum, they receive another penalty – already the second of the evening.
10 mins: Superb maneuvering of the Wallabies line through the middle and they are in the midfield combinations ready to break down the left. But then the game goes back to the line. Hmmm, was that necessary? The Wallabies looked poised for a kick but instead the referee has a long talk with Hill about White’s interference on the ground.
8 mins: England are putting their forwards through phases in their own 22 but there is no forward movement. Care kicks the field again and this time he makes good distance.
More injury problems for Australia. Chechel doesn’t look happy with his left shoulder, but he’s fighting for now.
7 mins: Australia scramble in the center of the field in the 22. The Wallabies break away from the back and have an acre on the right wing. The ball goes through the hands and looks destined for goal, but Hodge and Wright cross their wires and the ball goes into touch. Another drop for England.
