A few of us at The Verge have noticed something new in Twitter’s iOS app: when you pull down to refresh your feed, you might hear a few new noises. One is a small wind-up trill that plays when you first pull up the feed, and once your feed has finished refreshing, you may hear a short confirmation beep. (Though the sounds are more robotic than any real-life bird I’ve ever heard.)
I made a recording so you can hear what I hear. This is slightly different from the short “pop” you may have heard on refresh before.
We’re not exactly sure when the change happened, but we first noticed it on Friday afternoon and saw a bunch of tweets about the new Friday tweet. There have also been a handful of tweets over the past few weeks mentioning the tweet, which could mean Twitter is rolling it out slowly before a bigger release.
This doesn’t appear to be an iOS-only change. A Verge Android staffer sometimes hears the second new noise I described, and several of the tweets I found about the chirp were sent by Android.
If you want to hear the noise on your phone yourself, just try pulling down to refresh your feed. If you don’t hear it, try force closing the Twitter app and reopening it (this worked for me) and make sure you’re using the latest version of the app. We’re not sure how widespread this is, so you may still not have the sounds even if you try these steps.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to update the app to hear the wonderful new sounds again. And again. Maybe just one more time. Last time, I promise…
