A group of wild monkeys in India stole a baby from its father and threw it from a third-story roof, killing it instantly, according to reports.
The baby’s father, Nirdesh Upadhyay, 25, and his wife were on their roof with their 4-month-old son on Friday in Bareilly when several monkeys attacked them, DNA India reported on Sunday.
Upadhyay’s wife managed to escape from the confused monkeys but was cornered by the group. He tried to escape but dropped his son in doing so, letting one of the animals pick up the boy and throw him off the roof, the paper reported.
An investigation into the deadly incident is reportedly underway. The boy died instantly, India Times reported.
The enraged monkeys also attacked other relatives besides the boy’s father when they responded on the roof, according to the publication.
The dead boy is survived by his parents and one brother and sister. The family was preparing for the child’s naming ceremony when the fatal attack took place, reports said.
The boy’s death comes just a month after a gang of monkeys grabbed a one-month-old baby from his wet nurse in Tanzania on June 18. The boy, identified as Luhaiba, was eventually released but died of his injuries in hospital.
Police in Tanzania said such incidents were “not uncommon” in isolated villages such as Mwamgongo, which is close to Gombe National Park.
