A driver was clocked going 181 km/h in an 80 km/h zone Tuesday night on March Road at Carling Avenue, the Ottawa police traffic unit said.

“Ottawa’s roads are not tracks,” the unit warned, adding that the stunt driving charge includes a 30-day driver’s license suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment.
On Monday night, a 16-year-old driver with a G1 license also “learned the hard way that speeding is costly”, the unit said.
The teenager was stopped for doing 114 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Hazeldean Road, police said, earning him a 30-day license suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment.
Reminder for parents: the vehicle is towed and impounded after a stunt driving charge, regardless of whether the accused driver owns it or not.

Stunt driving — which involves speeding more than 50 km/h over the speed limit or 40 km/h or more on roads with a speed limit below 80 km/h — carries penalties that include fines of $2,000 to $10,000 and license revocations starting one to three years for a first conviction and up to life for a third.
The sentence also carries six demerit points and a mandatory driver improvement course.
The risk of death or serious injury is 11 times higher in motorway crashes that occur 50km/h or more over the speed limit than when vehicles collide at or below the posted speed limit, according to Department for Transport data .
