Update on Calgary bylaw fatal dog attack investigation

Two dog owners have been charged after their animals killed an 86-year-old woman in a northwest neighborhood in June.

Betty Williams was attacked by dogs in the alley behind her home in the 1500 block of 21st Avenue NW, in the Capitol Hill community, on June 5. She died of her injuries on the way to the hospital.

The dogs were confiscated and the City of Calgary is awaiting the outcome of its application under the Dangerous Dogs Act to euthanize the animals from the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.

Dennis Bagarich and Talyn Calkins, the owners of the three dogs, face a total of 12 charges under the Responsible Pet Ownership Act, including:

  • Three counts of animal attack on person causing serious injury;
  • Three cases of animal attack on a person;
  • Three cases of animal bites per person; and,
  • Three cases of running animals.

Criminal proceedings are being conducted on the incident.
