A 16-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark at Kismet on Fire Island Wednesday night.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded to reports of a shark bite around 5:45 p.m.

They say Max Haynes of Islip suffered a minor bite on his leg and made it out of the water.

News 12’s Kevin Vesey spoke with Haynes outside Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, where his leg was bandaged.

“I was a little shaken up before, but I’m really just tired — I had a long day,” Haynes said after being released from the hospital.

Haynes says his feet were just dangling in the water, trying to catch a few waves.

“But then just out of nowhere — this thing just kind of latched onto my leg,” Haynes said. “And I held on for a few seconds and it was just crazy.”

He says he laughed a little because he couldn’t believe what was happening.

Haynes suffered stab wounds to his leg and a cut to his finger.

He will have stitches on Friday.

Haynes says he’ll be back in the water “as soon as possible.”
