The findings, first reported by The Washington Post, were part of the production of a speech Trump gave the night after the riot. The panel is expected to show clips of the findings during its prime-time hearing Thursday, according to sources familiar with the committee’s plans. The footage shows that Trump is having a hard time keeping up with the effort to get the message down. Trump refused to say the election results were fixed and tried to call the rebels patriots. He also took great pains not to accuse them of any wrongdoing.
A spokesman for the January 6 special commission declined to comment on the election results.
Congressman Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat who is a member of the panel, confirmed Wednesday night to CNN’s Anderson Cooper that the panel has the findings and plans to share some of them at the hearing.
“The president showed extreme difficulty in completing his remarks,” Raskin said on Anderson Cooper 360.
“It’s extremely revealing how exactly he made these statements and we’re going to let everyone see parts of that,” he added.
Congressman Adam Schiff, another member of the committee, told CNN’s Don Lemon later Wednesday that the results “will be significant in terms of what the president wanted to say and what he didn’t want to say.”
The California Democrat said the tapes would show “all those who are calling on him to say something to do something to stop the violence. You’re going to hear the terrible lack of response from the president and you’re going to hear more about how he was eventually forced to say something and what he was willing to say and what he wasn’t.”
Excerpts from the videotapes will be part of a larger presentation in which the committee plans to detail Trump’s lack of attention to the ongoing insurgency. The commission said it would focus on the 187 minutes Trump sat back, refusing to act while the Capitol was under siege. Some committee members described it as a “dereliction of duty” on Trump’s part.
