Doug Bannister, chief executive of the Port of Dover, said his team had been planning the day “for months” and joined others in accusing the French authorities.

“To be let down in the way we have with inadequate resources and slow processing – through the border authorities – is just so disappointing,” he told the BBC.

Asked when he knew so many French employees would not show up for work, he said that “around 04:00 it became clear” that there would be problems today. Bannister added that today’s pressures and what it will take to overcome them are well known to all parties.

Pressed on how months of planning could lead to this, he said he wasn’t sure; “all we can do now is provide the right information” to passengers, he added.

Bannister advised travelers due to leave later today to check in with their operator and apologized for “the way [their] the feast begins”.
