Razer has turnkey features for $30

Razer continues to push the boundaries of what gamers are willing to buy to gain an edge over their opponents. Starting today, fans of the Razer Viper V2 Pro wireless gaming mouse can have the luxury of out-voting the other person with the $30 Razer HyperPolling dongle. This dongle is currently only compatible with the Viper V2 Pro and exists for the sole purpose of giving you an almost imperceptible edge over your competition by giving the wireless mouse a polling rate of 4000Hz.

The polling rate of a device refers to the number of times a mouse or other peripheral relays its information to your desktop. A typical polling rate for wired or wireless peripherals is around 1000Hz, meaning your desktop receives updates from your mouse once every millisecond. Not to be outdone, manufacturers like Razer have started making peripherals that offer polling rates up to 8000Hz. While maintaining a 4000Hz polling rate over wireless is certainly impressive, it’s hard to say how much this will affect gamer performance given that current cutting-edge gaming monitors go up to 500Hz.

Similar to how peripheral manufacturers race to equip their mice with more powerful sensors, it seems that polling frequency has become the new metric used to measure the performance of mice in the gaming environment. While there is empirical data to support the claims that a higher upvote rate leads to less lag with your inputs, it’s still debatable whether it makes you a better player. Razer seems to think so, and believes you’ll pay for the privilege.
