Gavin Newsom has a unique way of wooing voters in California.
The California governor ran his second out-of-state ad this month, first in Florida and now in Texas. In the ads, Newsom took aim at two prominent Republican governors who many have touted as potential GOP presidential candidates on two big national issues: gun control and abortion.
Gavin’s campaign for governor today reportedly bought space in the Austin-American Statesman, the Houston Chronicle and the El Paso Times. Newsom also today signed California Senate Bill 1327 today, a measure that uses a method similar to the Texas-style anti-abortion law aimed at gun manufacturers.
Today’s ad revolves around a quote Gov. Greg Abbott made when he signed the Texas anti-abortion measure last May:
“Our creator has gifted us with the right to life. And yet… every year children lose their right to life because of abortion. In Texas, we are working to save these lives.”
In Newsom’s ad, however, the word “abortion” is crossed out and replaced with “gun violence,” and the word “Texas” is crossed out and replaced with “California,” so the quote reads:
“Our creator has gifted us with the right to life. Yet… every year children lose their right to life to gun violence. In California, we are working to save these lives.”

Advertising money is likely to be welcome for local papers and could herald a rich presidential campaign cycle for regional media if big-state governors battle each other across state lines.
Newsom also joined the Donald Trump-led Truth Social last month, where he called out “red-state America’s murder problem” in a post that contrasted his efforts with those of GOP governors.
And late this morning, Newsom appeared in Los Angeles to tout the signing of California Senate Bill 1327 and his gun control efforts.
“No other state in the United States is doing more for gun safety than the state of California. Period. Period,” he declared at a morning press conference. “We are setting the tone and the tenor of the gun safety debate in this country.”
The Golden State governor continued, “We’re going to do more than just identify a problem, we’re going to think about how frustrating and frustrating it is to fix that problem. We will do more than others. We will step in and take action.”
Those words may come back to haunt Newsom one day if he does run for president. Detractors could seize on the quote and pair it with scenes from the state’s seemingly intractable homelessness crisis — which metastasized during Newsom’s tenure — or his profound silence on Covid over the past few months as a new strain and wave ravaged the state .
