Italy’s most popular party is struggling to find capable ministerial candidates as it prepares to form a far-right government, a political insider told Italian media.
The far-right Brothers of Italy party has little experience in national government, so it is calling on existing ministers to try to hire them before snap elections in September, it has been reported. Giorgia Meloni, the party’s leader, said today that she has become the target of a smear campaign since the fall of Mario Draghi’s government.
Corrado Formilli, a television journalist, said he was told by a minister in the outgoing coalition government that Meloni and Matteo Salvini, head of the anti-immigrant League party, were trying to recruit his colleagues for the government they were confident they would form.
