Thousands of people remain cut off from the rest of the province as wildfires continue to burn in central Newfoundland. The Bay D’Espoir Freeway remains closed for the second day in a row about 40 km south of the TCH.
This leaves many people in the Harbor Breton area without immediate access to Grand Falls-Windsor and points beyond.
Rodney Barney, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Service, says there is a risk of lightning in the area today.
The air quality is also reduced in the Central region due to the smoke from the fires.
Barney says the most extreme heat wave has left us. It will be windy in some areas, including Avalon, but temperatures will drop tonight, especially west of Avalon, dropping into the low to mid-teens overnight.
Crews continue to battle the fires on Baie D’Espoir Highway (Rt 360). The route will remain closed to traffic until further notice and people should avoid the area. We thank the team for their hard work and thank the public for their patience. #GovNL pic.twitter.com/Zdp6uFwqfw
