A jury found former Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen not guilty of sexual assault.
The week-long trial centered on a meeting between Virtanen and a then-18-year-old woman, referred to in court by her initials MS, in his room at the Westin Bayshore Hotel on September 26, 2017.
The woman testified that by her words and actions she made it clear that she did not consent to sex. Virtanen claims that the meeting was consensual.
After the allegations came to light in May 2021, the Canucks suspended Virtanen and then bought out his contract the following month. The only allegation of sexual assault was filed earlier this year.
The case went to the jury at 3:30 p.m. Monday, and the jury foreman told the judge the jury had reached a verdict when he arrived at the Supreme Court of British Columbia Tuesday morning.
