Halifax Community Gardens closed Tuesday after bark was stripped from the trunks of about 30 trees in the park.
In an email, a municipal official said the bark may have been stripped with an ax or hatchet, and the damage varies from tree to tree.
A post from the garden’s Twitter account said it appeared someone had broken in overnight and caused the damage.
The community gardens are closed today due to an ongoing police investigation. It appears that a person or persons entered the gardens last night and damaged a number of trees with an axe. We are deeply disheartened by this senseless act. #halifaxnoise

Many of the affected trees, including some historic trees, were around Griffins Pond. Crews are working to save as many of the trees as possible, but some trees may need to be removed.
In the coming months, the municipality will monitor the health of the affected trees. The total amount of damage is not yet known.
The park is expected to reopen on Wednesday.
