Two people are dead after a multi-vehicle crash involving a driver believed to have fled police late Tuesday night.
Metro Vancouver transit police said the crash happened just after 11 p.m. near 10th Avenue and 6th Street in New Westminster.
“Officers attempted to stop a vehicle which then allegedly fled at a high rate of speed,” MVTP said in a statement. “The vehicle was located a short time later engulfed in flames after causing a multi-vehicle collision.”
Police said two people in the other car were taken to hospital but died from their injuries.
The driver, who reportedly fled from police, and their passenger were arrested near the scene of the fire. Both are still in custody and could face charges of driving without a license, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and fleeing from police.
Transit police are continuing their investigation and British Columbia’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Service, has been notified of the incident. The IIO is tasked with investigating all police-related incidents in British Columbia that result in the death or serious injury of a member of the public, regardless of whether there are allegations of police misconduct.
