The Queen’s baton reaches Birmingham on the eve of the Commonwealth Games
The 2022 Commonwealth Games are underway after the opening ceremony took place last night to kick off 10 days of intense sporting action. Celebrities and musicians welcomed athletes from across the Commonwealth in a three-hour performance that showcased the best and brightest from the West Midlands. More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories will compete in the games with 280 medals up for grabs.
16 of these are on offer on the first day as gymnastics, triathlon and netball start on Friday. Olympic silver medalist Alex Yee won gold in the men’s triathlon for Team England’s first medal of the Games. Another Tokyo hero Georgia Taylor-Brown took silver in the women’s race. Later, in the velodrome, Laura Kenny helped England win bronze in the team pursuit alongside Josie Knight, Maddie Leach and Sophie Lewis before Australia took gold.
Women’s T20 cricket made its Commonwealth debut in Birmingham with a huge game as Australia saw off India at Edgbaston while England beat Trinidad and Tobago to kick off their netball defence. The action later moves to the pool where the first swimming medals are decided later this evening.

Women’s Triathlon Medals
England’s Taylor-Brown of England won a silver medal in the women’s triathlon earlier today, while Scotland’s Beth Potterpicking won bronze.
However, neither was able to surpass the Olympic champion as Flora Duffy took the gold.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Track Cycling
They faced Wales in the women’s 4000m team pursuit. The Welsh bombed out of the gate and opened up a lead of almost a second, but the English quarterback kept their heads.
Josie Knight went on for a long time at the front of the four before Laura Kenny took over to lead them home.
As Wales floundered, England grew in confidence and won bronze by over a second.

Scotland’s Eileen McGlynn – who has won Paralympic, world and European gold medals in her career but no Commonwealth gold – should win this next race against Australia’s Jessica Gallagher.
The Scot starts well and eases forward but Gallagher fights back, moves to the outside and squeezes in front of her on the line!
Australia took gold in the women’s tandem B sprint final, with Scotland and McGlynn settling for silver.

Neil Facchi of Scotland took the gold medal!
It was to break the Commonwealth Games record the Welsh pair had just set. On the final lap, he was one-hundredth of a second behind, but picked up the pace and finished his run in under a minute!
The Commonwealth champion is defending his title in the men’s 1000m tandem.
Scotland took gold, James Ball of Wales took silver and England’s Steve Bate bronze.

Ball and Rotherham lead! They jumped 1,000 meters in just over a minute to set a new Commonwealth Games record and take first place.
Another competitor left with the ball for Wales, who will take at least silver. He is currently in gold medal position.
That ride was two seconds faster than England’s Bate and Latham.

Two-time world champion James Ball and pilot Matt Rotherham are the next duo in the men’s Tandem B 1000m time trial. They race for Wales and are 1.8 seconds ahead of the previous English duo after the first lap.

The men’s 1000m tandem time trial final is underway at the velodrome.
This event features a visually impaired rider and a sighted pilot riding together in tandem in a time trial over 1000 meters. Each bike takes turns to race with the fastest final time winning.
The Englishmen Steve Bate and Chris Latham are the fastest around the track! The English pair were the fifth of seven duos to guarantee Bate at least a bronze medal.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Women’s Hockey
Wales take on Canada in a very close game in women’s hockey.
The big moment came in the first quarter after Canada goalkeeper Chloe Walton was penalized for a goal-line obstruction and Wales were awarded a penalty kick.
But from the spot, Cian French’s shot is poor and Walton makes an easy save.
