McCarthy has selected seven task forces in the summer of 2021 to begin crafting a legislative agenda if Republicans regain the majority, with the goal of releasing a document before the end of the summer that members can steer this fall. The seven working groups divide their focus between themes including: jobs and the economy; Big Tech Censorship and Data; The Future of American Freedoms; Climate and conservation; American security; A healthy future; and China’s accountability. The task force chairs held presentations earlier this year in seclusion in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. With gas prices, inflation and crime emerging as some of the top issues ahead of the midterm elections, Republicans not only plan to use them as a cudgel against Democrats this November, they’re also offering their own set of policy prescriptions for these issues in their quest to win back the majority.
“You’ll see the details released over the summer and probably by early September,” House Republican Rep. Steve Scalise told reporters at a weekly GOP press conference. “We’ve had these task forces over the last few months laying out the plans to lower inflation, to control spending, to lower gas prices, to secure America’s border.”
