Police are investigating a tragic incident in Portland after a body was found.
The discovery was made at the bottom of cliffs in the West Weares area of the island on Friday evening.
A police cordon has been put in place and this morning a police car was parked on the path below the beach huts, at the far end of Chesil Cove.
Police have called on the Coast Guard to help them retrieve the body.
This afternoon, a Dorset Police spokesman said: “At 7.33pm on Friday 29 July 2022, Dorset Police received a report of a body being found on Portland Cliffs.
“Officers are in attendance, assisted by the coastguard, to attempt to recover the body and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. No identification has been made yet.’
The body was recovered from the rocks this afternoon by the coastguard working with the police.
Coastguard teams from Wyke and Portland Bill stations were involved in the recovery operation, as was the Coastguard helicopter.
The helicopter was seen landing in a field opposite the former Royal Manor Arts College in Weston.
