An “accident” has been reported with a Canadian Snowbird aircraft at a northern British Columbia airport

First responders were called to the North Peace Regional Airport in Fort St. John, British Columbia, on Tuesday afternoon to respond to what officials described as an “aviation incident.”

In a social media post, the Fort St. John International Air Show said the plane went down during takeoff.

Canadian Forces Public Affairs Officer Major Trevor Reid confirmed Tuesday that an incident involving a Snowbird aircraft had occurred.

He said two Snowbirds were in town for the weekend air show.

Reid said it’s too early to say what caused the accident and an investigation is underway. It’s unclear how long the investigation will take, but he said the results will be made public.

According to Reid, the pilot was not physically injured.

In a statement, the city of Fort St. John said the fire was extinguished by the airport fire department by the time firefighters arrived.

“Despite all the precautions that are taken, accidents do happen and it’s heartbreaking in the air show world,” said the Fort St. John International Air Show.

Authorities are asking local residents to avoid the area as emergency crews continue to work.
