Flood Outlook Statement issued for the Sault region

Rainfall of between 15 and 25 mm and 50 mm in places is expected overnight on Wednesday

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority says moderate rain is expected overnight into Wednesday.

Rainfall totals are estimated at between 15 and 25 mm, reaching 50 mm in some areas due to strong thunderstorms.

Damaging winds and an isolated tornado are possible on Wednesday.

An increase in water levels in the anti-flood canals is expected. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid these canals and all waterways.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is issuing a flood forecast for area residents regarding current watershed conditions. Flood forecasting and warning are part of the Provincial Conservation Authority’s responsibilities. This statement is being sent so residents can be informed and informed.

Forecasters are pointing to moderate rainfall overnight into Wednesday. Rainfall totals are expected to be 15 to 25 mm. In some areas, rainfall amounts may exceed 50 mm due to severe thunderstorms. There is a chance for damaging winds and a possible isolated tornado on Wednesday.

Local rivers, creeks and streams are currently at normal levels. The predicted rainfall will result in increased levels and flows through the watershed. Localized flooding may occur in low-lying areas with poor drainage.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is currently running at normal levels. Flood control channels will experience rising water levels. It is important to remember that water in rivers, streams and canals will flow quickly during and after rainfall.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor flows through the watershed and provide updates as needed.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from flood control channels and all waterways. Streams can be particularly dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from waterways during this time.
